Hut Guidelines

The lodge will be open during ski season at Shawnee Peak 6:30pm Friday night through 5:30pm Sunday. There will be exceptions for long holiday weekends or school vacation weeks. In these situations, please check with assigned hutmaster for schedule.

The hutmaster in charge for the upcoming weekend will keep the registration book. Hutmasters shall be present and on duty when the lodge is in use. During scheduled weekends and holiday periods the assigned hutmaster and or responsible representative will sleep on the first floor. His/her authority will be supported by the Down East Ski Club.

The heart and soul of the DESC is often thought to be our lodge at the base of the Shawnee Peak ski area. It is believed the lodge is a success because it operates as a working community. It's quite easy to be part of the community at the DESC Lodge.. following are a few guidelines and suggestions:

Please store skis, snowboards, and poles outside on ski racks. If staying overnight put items in ski shed or lock in your vehicle. Hang coats in the racks available. Boots, gear bags, mittens, goggles, helmets go into the boot room in the basement. Items should not be left on benches, chairs or couches. (Overflow bags and boots may go in playroom).

Wooden cubbies are provided for dry foods; refrigerators are available for perishables and contain hut condiments such ketchup, mayo, and mustard. Please make sure to label ALL food that goes into the refrigerators - unmarked food and beverage is considered available for member consumption! Any food left on Sunday night will be tossed or redistributed.

The hut kitchen has spices, hot cocoa, coffee, pots, dishes and silverware for member use. All dishes need to be washed, dried and put away. Please wipe down countertops, tables, stove and microwaves after each use.

Saturday night supper is a community meal organized by the hutmaster on duty for the weekend. Many hands make light work! Participation in in meal preparation and clean-up is encouraged and appreciated! Fees are listed on the Hut Page.

Supper reservations should be made by Wednesday night, allowing hutmasters to shop accordingly. Those making reservations after Wednesday night may be requested to supply their own Saturday meal. Members are responsible for supper fees when cancellations are made after Thursday.

  • Reservations for overnight accommodations will be taken until Wednesday evening for the upcoming weekend. Priority is given to members and their families.

  • Reservations for guests can be confirmed Wednesday night, room permitting. Members who have stayed over the previous week must wait until Tuesday before registering for the upcoming weekend. Fees are due and will be collected by the on duty hutmaster on Saturday evening.

  • Members are welcome to make dinner reservations for Saturday night even if they are not planning on sleeping over. Cancellation of reservations must be made by Thursday at 5pm or the member will be responsible for supper fees.

  • When the lodge is open during holiday breaks fees will be collected at the convenience of the hutmaster on duty. Hutmasters on duty will make sleeping assignments; please check with them before storing your overnight gear.

  • Approval for use of any sleeping area other than the dorms , ie sofas , is at the discretion of the hutmaster on duty and will be generally limited to overflow or medical needs. Preferably any special requests will be made when a member makes a reservation.

  • Any member granted permission to sleep on the first floor or playroom must understand that they can not plan on sofas being available to them until after 11pm. The hutmaster is responsible for the security of the building and guests. Registered guests are asked to be in the lodge no later than midnight.

  • Overnight bags should be stored near your bunk. All bags and accessories should be off the floor by noon on Sunday, to allow people to clean. No food is allowed in the upstairs bunk area.

  • Keeping the lodge clean is the responsibility of all users, day or overnight. All members using the lodge are expected to participate in community chores: bringing in wood, washing dishes, sweeping floors etc. There is a ?to do? list on the kitchen counter on Sunday afternoons for final clean up. Please take a look and lend a hand.

  • Children should not remain in the lodge unattended. If leaving your child in the care of another member, please make an effort to notify the Hutmaster on duty. Children and guests should know who the Hutmasters are, so that if special situations arise, they know who they can go to if they need help or have questions. Children are not to play in the upstairs bunk area, boot room, bathrooms or basement hallways.

Use of the lodge outside of normally scheduled weekends will be at the discretion of the Lodge Committee. Requests must be made to the Head Hutmaster. However, at all times, use will be limited to members in good standing, and a hutmaster and or responsible representative will be present the entire period. The granting of these requests will be dependent on the availability of a current hutmaster. Normal usage fees will apply.

If you are new to the Lodge introduce yourself and your family. Not sure about something? Ask questions!

No items should be hung or stored on George, our resident moose. He is very old.
