Down East Ski Club Hut

The heart and soul of the DESC is often thought to be our lodge at the base of the Shawnee Peak ski area. It is believed the lodge is a success because it operates as a working community. The DESC lodge is  open during ski season at Shawnee Peak and for used for hiking trips during the summer. Reservations for staying overnight and the Saturday night meal must be with the volunteer hutmaster on duty. Supper reservations should be made by Wednesday night, allowing hutmasters to shop accordingly.
Saturday night supper is a community meal organized by the hutmaster on duty for the weekend. Many hands make light work! Participation in imeal preparation and clean-up is encouraged and appreciated! All members and the children using the lodge are expected to participate in community chores: bringing in wood, washing dishes, sweeping floors etc.
Wooden cubbies are provided for dry foods; refrigerators are available for perishables and contain hut condiments such ketchup, mayo, and mustard. The hut kitchen has spices, hot cocoa, coffee, pots, dishes and silverware for member use. All dishes need to be washed, dried and put away.
Lodge use is a privilege for members in good standing that have met club obligations. Each member is required to observe the governing bylaws, participate annually in two full days of labor at an organized work party. Work parties are held in the fall at the club lodge, and  the annual Down East Ski Sale, always the Saturday after Thanksgiving,  involves 4 days of set up and take down.
